Bombs Away: Delta Devils Drain 14 Three-Pointers In Upset Hornets

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Mississippi Valley State University men’s basketball program went unconscious from behind the arc, nailing 14-of-25 three-pointers (56%) and 30-for-55 (54.5%) overall to take down Alabama State on the road, 85-71.

Mississippi Valley State Top Performers

  • Terry Collins had himself a career night, going 8-for-13 (61.5%) with a career/game-high 24 points and six three-pointers on nine attempts (66.7%). He now has three straight games with ten-plus points and five on the season.
  • David McCoy tied his personal-best of 15 points and six field goals while connecting on his first multi-triple game of his career (2-of-2). He shot 85.7% (6-for-7), logging his second straight contest in double-figures and sixth for 2021-22.
  • Caleb Hunter continues to live up to his sharpshooter reputation, tallying his fourth outing with five-plus long balls as he hit 5-of-10 (50%) from distance, 43.8% from the field (7-for-16), and a career/game-best eight assists on top of 20 points. It was his ninth game of double-figure scoring in-a-row.
  • Gary Grant had his eighth consecutive night with ten-plus on the scoreboard, going 5-of-11 (45.5%) for 15 points and his second multi-block affair of the year.
  •  Daniel Umoh hogtied a game-leading nine rebounds to go along with four points and a rejection over 21 minutes on the court.

Notes

  • Valley produced its best shooting night in five years, shooting 54.5% from the floor while nailing 14 threes for a 56% success rate from long range.
  • The Delta Devils handed out 21 assists as a unit, the first time they crossed the 20-dime barrier since a November 28, 2018, beatdown of Rust College.
  • The Green and White had multiple players score 20-plus points for the first time this season.
  • Both the men and the women corralled an equal amount of rebounds as Alabama State did with the men being deadlocked at 32.

MVSU will set its sights on its first winning streak since 2019 on Saturday afternoon against Texas Southern inside the R.W. Harrison HPER Complex.
