BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Mississippi Valley State University baseball program got an all-conference selection for the first time since 2019 (Aaron Barkley, RP) and its first position player honored since 2013 (Edmund Cheatham, 2B) as third basemen Dreylin Holmes was recognized on the All-SWAC Second Team.
Despite only having the lone representative, MVSU still surpassed both Alcorn & Arkansas-Pine Bluff, who had zero players, while matching the representation of Bethune-Cookman, Jackson State, and Prairie View A&M who all had one.
Holmes, a sophomore from Griffin, Georgia, also became the first MVSU baseball player to win SWAC Hitter of the Week in 11 seasons on April 6. He was a revelation for the Diamond Devils, leading the SWAC in home runs per game (0.30) and ending the season second in the league with 12 long balls, the first Devil with more than five blasts in over a decade.
The slugger at the hot corner ranked tenth in the Southwestern Athletic Conference in slugging percentage (.611) with a team-long on-base (23) and hitting (11) streak. The Rust College transfer led the Green and White in most offensive categories including multi-RBI games (8), multi-homer contests (4), total bases (91), hits (45), runs (37), RBIs (33), walks (22), home runs (12), doubles (8), and on-base percentage (.380).
Along with being the top dog in the categories listed above, Holmes logged 11 multi-hit games, batting .302 with six steals, two sacrifice flies plus a triple.
