
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Mississippi Valley State University men and women’s track programs got excellent efforts from both sides as 13 personal-records fell on the day.
Freshman Darrione Joseph was phenomenal for Coach Banks, winning the 60m hurdles in a personal-low time of 8.94 on top of being a part of the 4x200m relay quartet that won its event in 1:48.10. The other three women involved in the race were Terreka Gibson plus Makiah and Myah Sherman.
The other relay team of Chelsea Okusagah, Joseph, Chanelle Houston and Gibson claimed third during the 4x400m at 4:08.88.
Michaela Brown is the only female to cause two of her PRs to fall, pulling in a sixth-place finish in the shot put (11.13m) and a weight throw of 9.79m.
Okusagah logged eighth for her performance in the 400m, running a 1:02.84 to be the final woman to earn a top-ten placement.
Other Devilettes that set new personal-records include Carrie Snipes (8.54 in 60m), Imani Walker (2:02.67 in 600m), Trenity Hill (4.73m in long jump) and Averi Sanders (4.30m in long jump).
Among the men, football player turned jumper Kenneth Martin made an impressive debut, claiming a runner-up placement in the long jump at 6.87m.
Another fellow football player, Frederick McGee tied his personal-best of 7.18 seconds in the 60m dash.
Kiion Smith claimed not one but two podium spots with his personal-record showings in the weight throw (15.26m) and shot put (13.64m) where he came in second and third, respectively.
Calvin Adolph also broke a pair of PRs during the weight throw (12.47m) and shot put (10.50m) as well.
Desmond Ferrell registered fifth in his competing of the 60m hurdles, running the event in a mark of 8.75 seconds.
Dezarion Singleton hit a personal-best in the 400m with a 51.30 while the 4x400m relay team of McGee, Dwight Smith, Jakobe Thomas, and Singleton came in fourth (1:34.50).
The program will get a reprieve for a week before getting back into the swing of things at the Jaguar Invitational on February 6 hosted by South Alabama.
