BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Mississippi Valley State University women’s track & field program painted the conference office Green and White this week as Darrione Joseph and Michaela Brown were named SWAC Track and SWAC Field Athletes of the Week, respectively.
Joseph, a freshman from Marrero, Louisiana, won both the 60m hurdles and 2x200m relays in just her second career collegiate meet. The 5-foot-8 sprinter won both the preliminary and finals for the 60m hurdles with her finals time coming in at a personal-low 8.94 seconds while she helped guide teammates (Makiah Sherman, Terreka Gibson, Myah Sherman) to a 1:48.10 clip to win the 4×200 relay during the KMS Invitational.
Brown, a junior from Memphis, Tennessee, broke her personal-record in a pair of field events; the shot put and the weight throw. She had her best showing launching the spherical ball, sailing it 11.13 meters to finish in sixth place while her 9.79m weight throw also counted as a new benchmark to be broken.
Brown, Joseph, and the rest of the track & field program will get the coming weekend off before ramping back up for the Jaguar Invitational on Sunday, February 6 hosted by South Alabama.
