Mississippi Valley Competes At Vulcan Invitational During Indoor Opener

Final Results

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Mississippi Valley State University men and women’s track programs began its 2022 campaign on Saturday, running, jumping, and throwing to numerous personal-records in the Vulcan Invitational hosted by UAB.

Kiion Smith stole the spotlight for the men, producing sixth and ninth place finishes in the shot put (13.59m) and weight throw (14.24m), respectively, with the shot put marking a new personal-record.

The only freshman to complete his events was Jabarii Coleman, claiming seventh in the high jump at 1.71m and 14th regarding his 5.93m long jump.

Frederick Magee missed a top-ten finish by the slimmest of margins, running the 60m in 7.18 seconds to come in 11th while Jakobe Thomas slotted in 20th (7.66) during the same event.

Dezarion Singleton registered a top-15 placement of his own, going for a new low time of 22.80 during the 200m.

Elijah Edney and Bob Francois wrap up the notable performances for the Delta Devils as they both set personal-records in the 400m at 52.71 (18th) and 55.79 (24th), respectively.

The Devilettes saw five student-athletes produce personal-bests while five Freshmen got their first taste of collegiate action.

Michaela Brown had the highest finish of the PRs, coming in 16th place for her weight throw of 8.85m while also logging a top-20 placement regarding her 10.29m shot put.

Trenity Hill set a new benchmark in the long jump, leaping 4.56m for a top-20 finish as well.

The final top-25 ranking for a returning athlete’s personal-best came via the legs of Chanel Watts whose 1:07.59 400m dash snuck right along the cut line at 25th.

Myah Sherman also broke a personal-low in the same event, going for a 1:08.42 to slot in right behind Watts for 26th.

The final PR for the Green and White women was Chanelle Houston, sprinting the 200m in 28.28 seconds, good enough for 36th.

As for the five newbies making their MVSU debut were Darrione Joseph (9.45 in 60m hurdles, top-25), Chelsea Okusagah (26.71 in 200m, top-25), Averi Sanders (4.19m in long jump), Terreka Gibson (27.83 in 200m), and Carrie Snipes (8.71 in 60m).
