Softball Ties For Most All-SWAC Representatives With Four

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Mississippi Valley State University softball program was well-represented on the 2022 All-SWAC teams as Daisy Page (P), Brianna Alston (SS), Jaylon Davis (OF), and Shelby Carson (DP) earned second team selections.

MVSU’s four representatives were tied for the most by a Southwestern Athletic Conference institution along with SWAC West champion Texas Southern as well as the two-time defending SWAC champion Alabama State.

Page, a senior from Anchorage, Alaska, won SWAC Pitcher of the Week on April 13, finished second in the league for complete games (13), fifth in wins (8) and shutouts (2), seventh regarding innings pitched (115.1) on top of placing ninth for both ERA (2.73) and batting average against (.249) while leading the Devilettes in every single pitching category including strikeouts (54).

Alston, a senior from Rocklin, California, was a two-time preseason all-conference selection but had yet to make the cut at the end of the year. She had a team-long ten-game hitting streak while fronting the squad in multi-hit outings (7), batting average (.300), and hits (33). The shortstop fell just six hits shy of the century mark for her career (94), scoring 14 runs, driving in eight RBIs, stealing seven bases, drawing seven walks plus legging out a triple.

Davis, a senior from Murrieta, California, one-upped Alston with 95 hits during her tenure in The Delta, going a perfect 11-for-11 on stolen base attempts this season, logging six multi-hit affairs and concluding the regular season with the tenth-most triples in the SWAC. The corner outfielder ended the year on a season and career-long 16-game on-base streak, topping the team in runs scored (15), doubles (6), homers (2), total bases (42), slugging percentage (.483), and on-base percentage (.365).

Carson, a sophomore from Raymond, Mississippi, concluded her sophomore season ranked top-50 nationally for triples per game (0.09) and sixth league-wide in total triples (6) on top of leading the Green and White in triples, homers (2) and runs scored (15). The third basemen tallied an eight-game hitting streak at one point, collected four multi-hit games, one multi-RBI contest, and hit .253 with 11 runs batted in.
