Mississippi Valley State Top Performers
- Maury Weaver was one of the few bright spots on offense, picking up his eighth multi-hit outing of the year (second-most on the team) with a 2-for-4 day and pushing his season-long on-base streak to eight-in-a-row (third-longest this season by MVSU). He also logged a pair of steals to push his total to 20 (his eighth multi-steal contest) plus a run scored.
- Darrien Chapman was the other Valley player with more than one base hit, going 2-for-4 as well with two swipes of second and the club’s lone RBI, a single to first base in the fifth.
- Calvin McClendon received the loss but was letdown by his defense, giving up only two earned runs out of eight surrendered with four whiffs and two walks over five-and-a-third.
- Jan Tolentino slapped a double and drew a walk, Angel Perez set a new career-best by reaching safely in his sixth straight via a hit-by-pitch, and Jose Salazar-Ortega matched Weaver with his eighth consecutive matchup getting on-base as he walked before promptly stealing his first career bag.
- Dreylin Holmes’ nearly season-long on-base streak finally fell after reaching as high as 22 games, going 0-for-4 to not reach for the first time since February 26 at Nicholls but has still been on-base 23-of-24 (95.8%) games played at MVSU.
Notes
- The loss drops the Delta Devils below .500 for the season in the middle game of a weekend series, going 3-4 through seven weekend sets and 2-3 in SWACtion.
A game three rubber match is on tap at 11 a.m. CT Sunday morning with Valley hoping to split the season series and steal one on the road in Daytona Beach.
