Track & Field Uses Samford Open As Warm-Up For SWAC Indoor Championships

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Mississippi Valley State University men and women’s track programs ended its regular season portion of the indoor schedule as it awaits the SWAC Championships on Thursday.

Both top performers on the day came from the men’s squad courtesy of Lucas Banks and Kenneth Martin.

Banks set a personal-record by chucking the shot put 12.77m, which marks the ninth-best distance in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

 Martin secured a sixth-place finish in the long jump, launching himself 6.81m.

Four other Delta Devils hit personal-records on the afternoon as Eugentavious Blue leaped 5.79m in the long jump, Jakobe Thomas ran a 7.57 60m dash, Chad Chandler paced himself to a time of 2:15.59 during the 800m and Desmond Ferrell qualified for the semifinals of 60m hurdles with a sprint of 8.63 seconds.

For the ladies, Chanel Watts arguably had the best showing, breaking a pair of PRs in the 200m (26.84) and 400m (1:02.60).

Averi Sanders (8.22) and Trenity Hill (10.17) each lowered their gold standards in the 60m hurdles while Michaela Brown was the only female field athlete to set a new best during the weight throw (10.07m).

The Devilettes and Delta Devils will now compete for the podium spots on Thursday, February 17 inside the Birmingham CrossPlex during the SWAC Indoor Championships.
